Origin of Life Materials

This list comprises materials needed for the entire module. Please note that specific materials lists are provided at the activity and lesson levels. For Each Student

  • Pencil and Paper
  • Goggles
  • Aprons
  • Half a piece of soda cracker
  • Latex gloves
  • Scissors
  • Color Pencils
  • Graph paper
  • Centimeter ruler
  • Student's previous concept maps (completed in lessons 1, 2, and 4)

For Each Student Team

  • Microscope
  • 2 Microscope slides
  • 2 Cover slips
  • 1-cm piece of onion, or, small section of an Elodea leaf (or other aquarium plant)
  • Toothpicks
  • Bottle of Methylene Blue
  • Eyedropper
  • Water
  • Tweezers
  • Latex Gloves
  • Petri dish with soap bubble solution (optional)
  • Straw (optional)
  • Three test tubes
  • Test tube rack
  • tweezers
  • Paper towels
  • Latex gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • One piece of brown paper bag, approximately 5 cm on a side
  • Lugol's iodine solution in dropper bottles
  • Biuret's reagent in dropper bottles
  • One of the following Testing Food items:
    • shelled peanuts
    • potato cubes
    • egg white
    • banana
    • corn oil
    • coral pieces
    • cheese
    • rice grains and water solution
    • sand (clean, no organic matter present)
    • water
  • One team will need:
    • 1 heaping teaspoon onion
    • 20 ml salt/soap solution
    • 5 ml enzyme solution
    • 25 ml cold alcohol (95% ethanol, if available)
    • 100-ml beaker
    • 1 25-ml graduated cylinder
    • 1 large test tube
    • 1 wooden splint
    • microscope slide or small portion cup
  • All other teams will need:
    • 3 50-ml capped test tubes or equivalent
    • 3 plastic teaspoons
    • 3 wooden splints
  • Two feet of string or yarn
  • Paper clips
  • 1/2 sheet of paper
  • Tape
  • Marking pens
  • DNA and RNA pieces, as prepared by students during Activity 2.3
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Butcher paper, 2 ft. x 2 ft.
  • Bag with 10 Hershey's kisses and 15 malt balls, gumballs, or other round candy
  • 3" x 3" paper square
  • Box or cup with lid containing 100 pennies
  • Hand lens
  • Winogradsky column
  • Straight edge

For Teacher

  • Computer with projection device
  • Overhead projector and pens
  • 500 mL beaker
  • 33 mL active dry yeast (three 1/4 oz. packets is ideal)
  • 120 mL (~ 1/2 cup) sterile clean sand
  • Warm nutrient solution
  • Overhead projector
  • About one quart soap bubble solution
  • Shallow, flat-bottomed glass dish
  • Straw
  • Variety of nutritional labels from food containers (optional)
  • Sample biofilms
  • Large "teacher demonstration" Winogradsky column
  • One whole onion with roots if possible
  • Clear tape
