Evolution of Technology Materials

This list comprises materials needed for the entire module. Please note that specific materials lists are provided at the activity and lesson levels.     For Each Student

    • Pencil
    • Paper
    • Pushpins (optional)
    • Tape
    • Colored pencils or pens (optional)

    For Each Student Team

    • 1 fork (of any material) for every two students
    • 1 pair of chopsticks for every two students
    • Handful of Styrofoam packing peanuts
    • Handful of popcorn kernels and/or dried beans
    • Marking pen(s)
    • Piece of butcher paper (~3 ft. by 3 ft.)
    • Scissors
    • Tape (or glue stick)
    • Research File Folder
    • 1 rubber band (Optional)
    • VTT Student CD-ROM
    • Index Cards
    • Two 3 x 5 cards
    • String
    • Tape
    • Adding machine tape
    • Meter stick
    • Materials for crystal radio:
      • 25 by 12 cm piece of cardboard
      • 6-inch length, 3 –inch diameter hollow cardboard cylinder (mailing tube)
      • 3-inch length, 3 –inch diameter hollow cardboard cylinder (i.e., mailing tube)
      • 16 meters of 24-guage solid copper wire (enamel coated magnet wire) (for coil)
      • 3.5 meters of 24-gauge stranded wire
      • Germanium diode: type 1N34A
      • Crystal radio earphone (high impediance)
      • Aluminum foil 25 cm x 50 cm (about 12" x 18")
      • Clear tape
      • Small piece of extra-fine sandpaper
      • Sheet of white paper (typing or copy paper, 20 lb)
      • Scissors
      • X-acto knife
      • Meter stick
    • 3 x 5 index cards (~15/team)
    • Clear light bulb inside a sealed, clear plastic bag
    • Overhead transparency pen

    For Teacher

    • Overhead projector
    • Assortment of technological items contributed by students
    • Assortment of technological items contributed by teacher. These should be items that students will not be likely to bring in, such as: screwdriver (construction); a shoe (transportation); bar of soap (medicine/health); a battery (energy/power); book (communication/information); fruit or vegetable (agriculture); a piece of wire (manufacturing)
    • One or more antenna wires, stranded, at least 30 m (100") long
    • Ground wire, long enough to reach from the center of the class room to your ground source
    • 3 (or more) wire strippers
    • Chart paper and markers
